Sampling and laboratory procedures

Small pieces of cortical bone (c. 5 × 5 × 2 mm) were sampled from the mandibles of the two Tower lion skulls (registration numbers NHM1952.10.20.15 and NHM1952.10.20.16) at the Natural History Museum, London, UK. Laboratory procedures were carried out as described in Barnett et al. (2006a) at the Henry Wellcome Ancient Biomolecules Centre (ABC), Oxford University, which is geographically isolated from modern molecular biology work and DNA amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
